Ensuring safe eating and drinking with dysphagia
The IDDSI Framework and Improving Dysphagia
Many cases of dysphagia can be improved with careful management. Speech and language therapists can teach new swallowing techniques and will advise on any changes that need to be made to food and drink
Once a diagnosis has been achieved, the IDDSI Framework provides clear guidance on the preparation of thickened food and drinks. Consistent descriptions and terminology can help simplify dysphagia conversation and management.
In the short term, the risk of aspiration – that means food or liquid entering the lungs – can be reduced and make swallowing much more comfortable. Longer term, ensuring that the person with dysphagia receives adequate nutrition is priority.
Nestlé Health Science aim to enhance both patient and carer quality of life. Our Resource® range provides options for different levels of dysphagia.
